Man-kind has evolved and continued to advance over the years, this is evident by the very building seen today. We have been able to construct buildings of various shapes and sizes. Today we will look into a vital component that is a crucial step in construction, scaffolding.
Scaffolding is a temporary structure that supports the initial structure and workers. They are used as a platform to carry construction tools and works needed on different levels of the building. It comprises various planks which vary in size and length and metal poles that surround a building’s exterior. It is used by workers men for support while going about constructing or making repairs. There are different types of scaffolding, but we will only talk about the most common.
Single Scaffolding
This type of scaffolding is applied in brick masonry, and it consists of various poles and planks that are parallel to the wall giving support to workers. It is also referred to as the brick layer’s scaffolding since the ledgers act as horizontal support connecting to the standards at a vertical angle. It generally has the cheapest due to its easy implementation.
Double Scaffolding
Unlike single, this scaffolding method uses two rows to strengthen the entire support structure since it’s used in stone masonry. Creating putlog anchoring with stone masonry is difficult, hence, using two rows where the first one is placed parallel to the wall while the other sits a bit further from the first pole. Then putlogs are placed to support the frames. Rakes, a tie that secures the scaffolding to the building, are also used to provide additional support.
Wooden and Bamboo Scaffolding
According to scaffolding Kenya this type is very uncommon; however, it is adopted within Asia. They mainly use wood or bamboo sticks as poles and planks and are regarded as the most flexible and Eco-friendly. They are the cheapest as compared to the rest because of their availability.
Suspended Scaffolding
This kind of scaffolding does not require a putlog anchoring; rather it is suspended from rooftops with the aid of wires and chains. The platform’s level can be adjusted using a lever or an electronic system. This type is common among wall painters, window cleaners, or maintenance workers.
Cantilever Scaffolding
This kind of scaffolding is used under various conditions such as; the ground being too weak or when the wall used isn’t near any traffic. They are supported by needles that are erected through holes in the wall. Due to this reason, it is referred to as needle scaffolding. Using this type of saddling is deemed highly unsafe, as compared to the rest, thus extra caution is usually advised when using it.
Steel Scaffolding
Steel Scaffolding uses steel tubes that are fixed together to provide support. It is easy to assemble and dismantle, and it also comes with higher durability and resistance to fire. It is considered the safest among all types of scaffolding methods. Unfortunately, because of its high emphasis on safety, it is also expensive.
In conclusion
Scaffolding is a crucial process within construction, but it is used for other jobs. Choosing the right scaffolding method greatly depends on the type of building and also on the budget of the organization or individual.
